Just like Header, the footer can also be customised using Appearance/customise.

Once you click Footer tab, a panel will appear where you can edit the footer widget width and extreme bottom footer elements.

You have choice to display default, 1, 2, 3, 4 columns in footer widgets.

Now you can use the default Footer columns found in Appearance/Widgets to put widgets in footer.
